The clocks go back one hour at 2am on Sunday 29th October 2017, this brings with it extended hours of darkness which means your home is left in the dark for longer. This gives burglars longer to strike as it is easier to identify if nobody is home.
Here are a few tips:
- Make sure all windows and doors are locked - also keep doors locked even if you are in the house.
- Do not leave keys in view of doors or windows and do not leave the key in the inside of the lock.
- Ensure any garden gates or side entrances are locked.
- Make sure you set your intruder alarm when you are not in the property. If you have the facility to do a night set then ensure this is also set when you are in bed.
- Consider investing in a timer for your lights so that they come on at a certain time to make it look like someone is home.
- Consider leaving the television or a radio on if you are out for the evening.
- Install security lighting outside your property with a motion sensor.
With the dark nights usually comes a drop in temperatures, remember never leave your car running unattended outside your property whilst it defrosts, this is not only a traffic offence on a public road but if it is stolen your insurance will probably not pay out.
Research has been shown that there are a set of security actions which can help to provide up to 50 times more protection for your home versus no security.
This has been recommended by police throughout the country.
Here is how you can hep to protect your home:
