Recent research has concluded that it only takes five minutes for three burglars to enter your home and make away with your most expensive items. Laptops and computer equipment are the biggest growers in terms of popularity amongst burglars. In 2004-2005 just 16% of burglaries involved laptops being stolen compared to 39% in 2013-2014. The value of items stolen has also increased by two-thirds since 2004. Burglars now make off with an average of £2,167 worth of goods per break-in.
Burglars tend to pick houses that they know are empty, this accounts for 47% of all burglaries. However, worryingly a quarter of people who are burgled come face to face with the thief.
Burglars look for homes that are easy to target, present the smallest risk of being detected, and have a quick and easy way to escape should they be detected. They will pick the house in the street that looks the least protected, has poor outside lighting and easily accessed windows and doors. The most concealed properties are easy targets and present less of a threat of getting caught by neighbours or passing vehicles.
There is always a spike in burglaries at this time of year when the hours of darkness are getting longer. This gives burglars more time to strike, and they are less likely to be noticed due to the dark nights. The build up to Christmas is also a prime time for burglars to get their hands on the Christmas presents you have purchased for your loved ones so ensure that your home is secure and presents well hidden.
Interestingly there is also a high claim rate for thefts from the home during the summer months also. This could be due to properties being vacant whilst people are on holiday. Burglaries during the summer months could also be due to a more relaxed attitude to home security by householders, with windows and doors being left open due to the warmer weather.
When reviewing your home security please take a step back and try to view it like a burglar would, this will hopefully enable you to identify any weaknesses and give you the opportunity to put it right before you become a victim.
