Security advice for small businesses
27th September 2013

Today more than ever there are unfortunately greater threats to people and property.  Owners of all types of businesses are not immune to this threat.  Some small businesses fail to address their security needs until it’s too late and there has been an incident on their premises. Small business owners are equally and if not more prone to burglaries and thefts than other larger businesses.

So, take a look around your business.  How secure is it?  Are there things in place to protect the personal safety of your staff, customers and yourself?  How vulnerable is your property and your stock?  Once you have assessed the security issues make sure you take action!

Here are a few tips for small business owners:

  • Use a variety of security solutions to protect your business, such as an intruder alarm, CCTV, Smokecloak, panic alarm and fire alarm.
  • Check you alarms and security systems regularly to ensure they are in full working order.
  • Keep the business well lit at all times.
  • Don’t put a ‘closed’ sign up this is an invitation to thieves.
  • Make sure access points cannot be easily tampered with.
  • Keep limited cash on the premises and vary your times and routes to the bank.
  • Try to keep valuable items out of sight from windows.
  • Ensure your staff are trained to identify suspicious behaviour.
  • Pre-programme telephones with emergency contact numbers and ensure telephone lines are installed in such a way so they cannot be tampered with this is especially important if your alarm is connected to your telephone line.
  • Have your intruder alarm monitored and consider using an SIA Approved Security Company for alarm response and key holding services rather than your staff, this ensures you are not putting yourself or your staff into a potentially dangerous situation.

Security planning and implementation will ensure the safety of staff and property in these somewhat uncertain times.  If you wish to discuss your security needs please contact us either by telephone or use the request a call back button on our website.
