Protect yourself online
6th June 2016
With an increase in the use of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to stay in contact with people we know there has also been an increase in the use of social media by the criminal fraternity to find their next victim.
Many people post on social media when they are going on holiday, out for an evening or away for a weekend, this tells potential burglars when your home is going to be vacant and when it will be easy to target.
To protect yourself on social media we advise doing the following:
- Search online for yourself to find out what information is readily available to people.
- Check each others social networking sites privacy settings.
- Set your accounts privacy controls to private and be wary of friends of friends permission settings, this setting widens the amount of people that can access your information.
- Check which online applications have access to your private data.
- Be wary of friends requests from people you have never met.
- Limit what you publish - such as new purchases, photos of your jewellery, when you are away etc.
